If you are of if you know somebody who is going to be getting married soon, there has probably been mention of buying a wedding garter. The wedding garter has become quite a popular staple of any bridal outfit and in some cases it is considered a completely essential accessory that a bride cannot walk down the aisle without. Though the wedding garter can come in many colors and styles, many brides tend to use this opportunity for the accessory to reflect their something blue. This comes from the traditional wedding rhyme that goes as follows:
Something old, something new... Something borrowed, something blue... and a silver sixpence for her shoe.
To incorporate blue in with their wedding garter, brides will often wear one made of all blue materials, or even one with a blue bow or gem attached to a white garter. The meaning of adding something blue to the wardrobe is that the color is supposed to represent loyalty and purity. The wedding garter has come quite a long way from just being an ordinary item to help hold up your stockings!
Not only is a wedding garter a fun item for the bride to wear, there are also several rituals that many couples take part in that involve this garment at their reception festivities. During a portion of the reception, the groom removes the garter from the leg of his new bride. He then tosses it blindly into a crowd of bachelors gathered around him. Superstition has it that whomever catches the wedding garter will be the next male to be married. Sometimes, the male who caught the wedding garter will then put it on the leg of the bachelorette who caught the bouquet during the bridal toss.
