It was not so long ago, (and the tradition survives to this day in certain regions of the planet) that arranged marriages were the order of the day. Parents selected a suitable spouse for their beloved child, based entirely upon social status, financial prospects and political gain. Love wasn't even a small part of the equation. Sometimes, love (or something similar to it) would eventually come. Even if it did not, an arranged marriage was still more about family standing than anything having to do with heartstrings and enchantment.

More often than not, the betrothed couple would not even see each other before the wedding. Thus, the veil. When one's parents arranged a marriage, a person could be reasonably assured of having a fruitful, if not love-filled, union.

Veils add much to the mystery and feeling of conquest that a revealed secret provides to some men. Veils may be constructed of ivory lace or stiffly starched organza- the eventual effect is the same. Fingertip-length or so long as to require attendants, veils are a lovely and mysterious addition to any style of wedding attire. If you'd like to add an air of mystery to your wedding day, find a veil that suits your style, and wait for the moment your groom lifts your veil to those words, "You may now kiss the bride".
