Wedding Superstitions

There are hundreds of wedding superstitions out there. Sometimes it's fun to follow superstitions, even if you don't believe in them. Some superstitions simply have touching stories behind them. Here are a few of the most common wedding superstitions.

When a newlywed couple enters their home, wedding superstition holds that the groom should carry the bride over the threshold because if the bride should stumble while entering the home, it is a bad omen. Tying tin cans to the bumper of a newlywed couple's car is good luck, as the noise frightens away evil spirits. It is considered good luck to save the top tier of the wedding cake, and share it on your first anniversary, the wedding superstition holds that it brings luck, but at the very least, it will bring back fond memories of your wedding day.

Wedding superstitions about rain and tears are plentiful. For example, if a bride cries on her wedding day, those shall be the last tears she ever sheds over her marriage. Alternately, the rain is said to bring good luck. Hanging a rosary outside (on a clothes line on one, from the window in another, and on a rosebush full of thorns in yet another) is said to keep rain away and keep for a bright and sunny day. Some other wedding superstitions hold that a statue of the Virgin Mary should be placed in the window to keep rain away.

As for clothing, those wedding superstitions are abundant. A penny worn in the bride's left shoe is for wealth in the marriage. The veil is said to disguise the bride from evil spirits, and that is the same reason, according to wedding superstition, that the bridesmaids are dressed up. The color white is said to be worn for joy, or because the white represents purity, or because white represented the family's wealth, since the color white was hard to achieve. It is considered bad luck, according to traditional wedding superstition, for any one's dress to be longer than the bride's.
