Andersen House (Washington DC)
Palatial is the right word. So are ‘gothic’ and ‘elegant’. ‘Memorable’ is also another word I would like to use for Washington DC’s Andersen House. It’s situated along the Embassy Row and is a real sight in itself. We knew the weather was going to be rough during our visit, so thank goodness we had a Washington DC charter bus rental vehicle at our disposal throughout the day. As we approached the Andersen House, I was breathless!
As we entered the building, the feeling of being catapulted forward into a time where romance novels are written around captures you, encapsulates you, keeps you captive and enchanted. It says somewhere that the lavish décor is of the Ambassador Lars Andersen and his wife, Isabel’s choosing. Good taste, we agreed.
They should charge for admission but at the time I visited this Washington DC attraction, it was free. Inside, we found a lot of revolutionary artifacts that one can only dream about and it’s the kind of museum that does not leave you bored out of your skull with the same-old, same-old. They’re quirky, as far as we can see. Our visit was a (sadly) rather short one.
I loved the mural of the owner’s favorite motorcar tours of the city. Everyone was surrounding it because it was in the grand ballroom (which was surreal, let me tell you that!) while everyone’s trying to decipher each detail that went into the display. It was like a magnet that draws you towards how the people back then lived. The things they enjoyed, the joy of having a motorcar to ride around, the classy, trendy and elegant people simply knew how life should be lived – not the way we’re living right now.
Accordingly, there are recitals performed every week but when I was there with my friends, there wasn’t one. So, if that’s what you want to go for, call ahead of time and ask for performance schedule.
One couple who was there on their honeymoon couldn’t stop gushing over the displays and paintings. They said that they were from Italy and found Andersen House quite by accident – what an amazing accident, wouldn’t you say?
Although there are many long-standing buildings and mansions to be found all over the country, Andersen House is one of the few that really stood out above the rest. I would strongly recommend it to her.
