The Majestic Fox Theatre
The Majestic Fox Theatre is said to be Bakersfield 's premier source for concerts and live entertainment shows. Located at 2001 "H" Street Bakersfield, California, this historical theatre provides extraordinary acoustics in an intimate setting - thus delivering an amazing entertainment experience that you will not find anywhere else.
The Majestic Fox Theatre is a community treasure, a symbol of an era of elegance, romance and big screen entertainment. The 1,500-seat Majestic Fox Theatre was originally designed by the famed Los Angeles architect, S. Charles Lee. It opened on Christmas Day in 1930, and was one of the last of its kind of built in the gilded age of great theaters. In the 1930s, it was the Majestic Fox's golden years, with its big silver screen featuring the first "talkie" motion pictures.
The Majestic Fox Theater's construction proved itself when it survived the 1952 earthquake that destroyed many lesser structures. In 1953, the original Mediterranean Village interior was replaced with a contemporary Art Deco motif, inspired by Fox West Coast Theaters' Charles P. Skouras, and a lavish concession area was added, together with a remodel of the marquee, box office and main entrance. Even the original screen was replaced with a Cinemascope 20' x 45' format and the projectors upgraded with a 6000-watt carbon arc lamps and anamorphic lenses.
However, the Majestic Fox Theater's doors were closed after 47 years in the show business in 1977, and except for a short period from 1983-84, the theatre was quiet, until June 28 1994 . It was at this time that the non-profit Fox Theater Foundation officially saved the theater from "death". There were over 380 "Save the Fox" donors who donated to the foundation for the restoration works that began July 1 st . Today, the Fox is proud to be recognized for its fine acoustics and also as the only Fox with its Skouras signature intact, a classic art form radiating a rare mystique.
